Marias Pass Fossils

Fossil scaphite cephalopods (ammonites) and clams may be found in the shale formations in the Marias Pass vicinity. This shale is very friable, and the fossils are prone to break if one is not careful. Access is via US Hwy 2, the Theodore Roosevelt Highway, and/or forest service roads. Caution: The BNSF railroad parallels US Hwy 2; the far side of the railroad right of way in this area is the boundary with Glacier National Park, where collecting is illegal. Be circumspect in this regard.

From time-to-time, new location cards will be added to this list, so you may want to check back often.
